As giants like Midjourney, OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft freely plunder their work, the stock photo industry—Getty aside—stands by, silently complicit in its own demise. Most of their activity is limited to sharing articles about pending lawsuits and legislation, hoping that maybe somehow they will gain something out of it. At the same time, they remain completely paralyzed and stunned. It’s akin to watching someone loot your store to construct a more advanced one right beside it, while you read about your own plight in the news, vainly hoping for someone else to intervene.
When all is said and done, and the stock photo industry landscape is a complete devastation, some will gather once more and look at each other in a “what the F**K did just happened” moment.
